Blog #1: Another-CSI-Theme-Song-Type of Blog

This one should be a no-brainer...

Who are you...Who? Who?
I really want to know...

-- The Who

For the first assignment on this blog, I'm giving you a softball. Write about what you know best...yourself.

Answer the basics. Who are you? Your name, your major (if you have one), the things that make you tick. Fill up about 300 words (the equivalent of a typed, double-spaced page with one inch margins) and perhaps give us a factoid or two that we couldn't guess from looking at you.

Be as personal as you choose to be, and no more. I'm not asking for deep, dark secrets, but I do want to get to know all of you more. Post your response as a comment to this blog. Later on, we'll all be authoring our own posts, but for now, a response is fine. If you can't click on "Submit", break your answer up into two parts. But 300 words or so can fit in one comment.

One more thing -- choose your theme song. Tell us what song you listen to that really is YOU. Put that in your response.

  2. hey, I'm Elan Beeber. I'm a senior history major here at Kent State. I'm from Atlanta Georgia and, no, there is really no good reason why I came so far and to such a cold and gray place like Kent for college. As for who I am, guess i could say I'm nothing all to special; just your average young, apathetic, kid whose probably to smart for his own good. I have some real eclectic interest, like old Samurai flicks, (favorite being Sword of Doom- staring Tatsuya Nakadai as Ryunosokue, a sociopathic ronin who travels around feudal Japan starting duals with whoever and being an all around badass, or Ran- the Akira Kurasawa remake of King Lear based in Japan- both are awesome films but be forewarned they are subtitled.) As this is an English class blog i suspect this is the part where I'm supposed to quote a bunch of authors and books and make myself sound like the real literate type but to be honest I do most my reading online or in graphic novel form (currently working through the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman- various stories based around an anthropomorphic interpretation of dream- some truly obscure and intriguing narratives) I am though a fan of Hemingway, Dostoevsky, and have read most all the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, (yes, I'm very down with Middle Earth) I've always had a real passion for comedy, am a big fan of Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Richard Pryor, Woody Allen, Zack Galifianakis, and others. Have I reached 300 words yet? Just checked Microsoft word and only at 230. Hurm, what else, I've been fortunate enough to do a fair amount of traveling already; i've been all around the United States (can boast being in all 48 continental states, though some i just drove through [michigan]. I've also been to Europe twice before, visiting France (Paris and southern), Italy (Rome, Venice, Milan), England (London) and Greece (Athens- which topped rome as the dirtiest place i've visited in Europe). Woo, I think that makes 300. Oh, as for a theme song that really all depends on the action its accompanying, but in any case it would probably be produced by the RZA or Dimitri Shostakovitch.

  3. Hi, my name is Kayla Meehan. I am a freshman and also a senior at Hudson High School. My major is Athletic Training but I am hoping to go to graduate school and become a Physician Assistant. The main reason I’m still in high school is to finish up my four years of softball so I can play in college. I plan on going to a division 3 school to play softball so I can focus on my hard major and play the sport I love. I am trying to decide between Capital University, Heidelberg, and Mount Union. While I’m talking about Mount Union I would like to send my prayers out to everyone involved in the crash last night. Dan Gorman, who was the head of the Athletic Training department, died in that bus crash. He was a great teacher and a great person all around. But now I have to make my decision for what school I want to go to, which is hard for me, considering I love all three of those schools. The most important thing for me is to be able to do my major and play softball without being too stressed out. I also play volleyball and bowling. Something you might not know about me is that I’m dyslexic. It mainly means I get words mixed up in my head. Yes it can be hard at times but I have learned to work through it. I feel it is something I have to overcome everyday and is a big accomplishment for me. Also, I have become a better student because of this disability. I remember when I was younger it was harder for me to read than everyone else. But I spent extra time working on it and it has made me the student I am today. These are a couple of things about me and I hope you can get to know me.
My theme song would be: Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow

  4. Hey I’m Brandon. I’m from Diamond Ohio, most people have never of it but that’s how it is out here. Not a store within 15mins of driving. I’m a freshman here at Kent, starting my second semester. I’m majoring in criminal justice. I want to either be a state trooper or a k9 unit, maybe both if they have that. I got into this major because of training with dogs. During the summer on weekends I go to a club where they train German shepherds in obedience, tracking, and protection. I’m the one wearing the bite suit and letting the dogs bite. It’s fun and it gives me the ability to meet new people, of course there all much older and I’m the only “kid” but it’s ok. If someone asked me to describe myself in a few words I would probably say athletic, not very outgoing, partier, and fun to hang with once you get to know me. Not to mention pretty much the best at all video-games. I’m not big into reading or writing. In grade school whenever we had to pick a book to write a report on I always picked one that had a movie to it. I can honestly say I’ve only read 2 books in my life. Sad but I don’t enjoy it. I watch a lot of t.v in my free time; my favorite show is ‘House’ for sure. Unlike eabeeber I haven’t traveled very much. About the furthest I’ve made it is p.a. I was going to go to S.C to visit a friend from hs during winter break, but I hit a deer on night on my way home and totaled my car so that went right out the window. I don’t have a very good driving record. I’ll go in order. My first car wasn’t really my fault. It was old and rusted out and literally fell apart on the road, wheels and all. Then I used my mom’s car which my friend hit at a party that was fun to explain. Then I got my second car which I got t-boned in, totaled. Then I used our van which I smashed into my dad’s truck (woot for the 2 in 1), also fun to explain. Then I had my third car which is the one I hit a deer with. Now I’m back to my mom’s car, awesome right? So my theme song would have to be The red by chvelle. I just like the song and its talking about growing up and the choices you make.

  5. Who am I? I am Jermala J.

Tatum. I was born in Cleveland,

Ohio and I have been here my

whole life, I am eighteen years

old and I am a Fashion Design

major. I am the oldest of three

and the first out of a twenty

year time span to be attending

college. In high school you can

say I was pretty popular. I

played basketball and I was a

cheerleader. I was also voted on

homecoming court and I won best

     dressed of my class.

The last three years of my life I

have been in a relationship. His

name is Wesley he is my

best friend and I hope to keep

him in my life. I am a very

outgoing person I love to laugh,

joke, and have fun. When I am

new to things off hand I

observe then I reaction once I'm

    comfortable then it's

hard to not notice I'm not

     around. I let my imagination

paint pictures that I want to

bring to my reality. I believe I

have to offer this world and I

    do not want to disappoint.

I want to travel and learn more

     about fashion, style, and people.

I really want to settle in

    California to farther my chances

of being a designer or stylist

    I actually may have a

    chance to move there pretty

soon but I'm not to sure yet.

I know a lot of people do

not have this opportunity so I

really want to make the best of

it. I really can't think of my

    theme song because I feel

like any thing moving can get

me going. I base life off feelings

so if I'm happy give me

     something upbeat and I'll dance

my butt off if I'm down

     something slow with meaning.

I am the best to define myself

but even I don't know everything

    about me.

  6. When the levee breaks-Led Zeppelin. I chose this as my theme song because I enjoy classic rock.

My name is Neil Guzzetti, and I'm a Freshman at Kent State University. You could have probably guessed the Freshman part. Let me tell you some things that you probably couldn't have guessed.

I'm a 24, yes 24, year old Freshman. Some of you might wonder as to why a 24 year old is a Freshman. The answer is simple. Upon graduating East Palestine High School in 2004, I immediately enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman, and was subsequently deployed to Iraq. Two tours and thirteen countries later (including a 3 year layover in Alaska....No, I did not see Sarah Palin), my contract with the Army expired and I found myself attending Kent State University.

Another juicy piece of information that you probably couldn't have guessed is that I have a family. I currently live with my fiance and her 5 year old son. I just recently witnessed the birth of my first child (girl) who, thankfully, waited until Winter Break to be born.

I love video games. My first system was the Sega Genesis, and since then, I have been hooked. Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo DSI, you name it, I have it. Except for Playstation 3, because who wants to spend that much money? I also enjoy riding motorcycles. Especially my 2006 Suzuki GSXR-750, with which I frequently break the posted speed limits. I am also a fan of various firearms, weapons and ordinance. What do you expect from a grunt?

I'm also a huge movie buff, as long as the movie falls within a desirable genre. I enjoy the action, comedy and downright weird genres, while I shun the typical love story. I absolutely abhor the "classics", to include Psycho and To Kill a Mocking Bird

  7. My name is Allison Sitkowski. I am an 18 year old freshman from Waldorf, Maryland. My major is Exercise Science and I want to be a personal trainer on a professional level with my degree. The song that best fits me is God Love Her by Toby Keith. I graduated High School a year early to get away from the Maryland drama. That was the second best decision I have ever made in my life. The first is making the decision to be saved into the body of Christ.
I have been playing hockey for seven years and it is my passion. I have played roller, field and ice hockey. Broomball has been my latest tackle. Broomball is basically ice hockey without skates and different sticks. In my years of playing hockey being the goalie for roller is my favorite. The adrenaline of a pick flying at you at about 70 MPH is heartwarming to me. I am a risk taker and hockey gives me that risk without getting in any trouble. Hockey is another way of empting my mind. If I ever have any problems I play a game of hockey and no matter how big the problem I always leave the rink calmed and with an apology or solution. The Washington Capitals have been my team since I knew what hockey was. My favorite player would most definitely be Alexander Ovechkin. He has made his mark in the NHL and deserves every award he has ever received.
My family background is the exact opposite of high class. I grew up on a farm with two hunting dogs and a family of mechanics. My mother, step dad, and grandparents are the ones who have always encouraged me to do best. I am the first person in my family to go to college and not work at my family’s mechanic shop, Adams Fleet Service. By the end of 2011 i am having my name changed to Allison Russell. James Russell is my step dad, but he is more of a father than I have ever had.

  8. My name is Mindy; I’m 19 years old and a freshman. I have 3 siblings, they’re all married so that would make me the youngest. This fall, I plan on transferring to the Eastliverpool Branch for Physical Therapy Assistance. This will give me the opportunity to help individuals who may have physical limitations or challenges. I was involved in physical therapy for 2 years due to an intoxicated driver who committed vehicular assault upon me. Because of all the help I received from others, my goal is to return the favor to those who are in need. I am very social and I love being around people.
Having a near death experience has taught me life is sacred and to make the most of the time I have here. I don’t want to waste my time being depressed about something that I can not erase. Instead, I manage to find some sort of humor in situations such as this. Making people laugh is something that I enjoy doing.
Because of the condition I was in, my chances at survival were very slim. My doctors, and many others, often remind that I am a miracle. Shortly after my accident I was introduced to the song “God must really love me” by Craig Morgan. Just by looking at the title, the song meaning is pretty self explanatory. I believe this fits me so well that I had it tattooed a year after my accident. This song is indeed a country song. To most people this is an interesting song choice because others usually wouldn’t expect me to listen to this particular genre of music. Growing up where I did, which is Paris Township, everyone listened to country music. I prefer alternative punk-pop rock music but I also enjoy some country here or there.
I prefer not to inform others about my accident. However, it is a part of me and it is very hard to not mention it due to the impact it had on me.

  9. I'm Sam, 18, an English major, and freshman here at Kent. I spent a majority of my senior year in high school floating about the English department, and took nearly every English course my school had to offer. I love to read and write—I'm actually in process of writing my own novel, which is slowly but surely coming along. I enjoy listening to music, and I can usually be found listening to my iPod whenever I study. My friends and I are attempting to put a band together, for which I may be the drummer or the bassist (we still haven't quite nailed down the fine details.)

Something interesting that you might not know about me is that I'm learning Japanese, and might possibly get a certification to teach English in a Japanese school. It's an intriguing language, and after you get over the initial shock of having to memorize 92 characters, it isn't horribly difficult to figure out. To be honest, I personally had an easier time in my first Japanese class than I did my French class in high school.

As I said in class, Star Wars is my favorite movie The Empire Strikes Back being my favorite. I suppose you could say I'm obsessed with it—I have everything from themed calendars, coffee mugs, and candles, to action figures, posters, and even a tattoo. Besides Star Wars, I also enjoy Aliens, anything with Johnny Depp, most work by Tim Burton, Lord of the Rings, and most other action/adventure, horror, and comedies.

If I were to choose a song that describes me, I would have to choose “The Fight Song” by Marilyn Manson. I'd like to think that I live my life according to my standards not to those of the ones around me. I'm not going to let the world brainwash me, I won't become it's slave. Plus the song is also somewhat catchy.

  10. My name is Kyle Delker, I was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio. I am a freshman at Kent State and I am majoring in the most time consuming major…architecture. Almost all my time is devoted to this major. For my final project I spent almost 50 hours on it in one week. But when I am not slaving away in studio gluing paper and sticks together I enjoy spending my time just being active. Either I play basketball, racquetball or just workout. Nothing is better than to get a good sweat in during the day.
Some things that aggravate me are how much it snows up here in Kent. I mean the other day the sun was shining and it was still snowing some how. Really I guess it should not bother me because I don’t have a car but still I would like it not to snow for one day. Another thing that annoys me is people with annoying laughs that make your ears bleed every time something funny is said. I also hate how bad the Cincinnati Bengals are.
Something that you can’t tell about me from looking at me is that I am a huge classic rock fan. I probably could beat most people at name that tune in the classic rock era. Don’t get me wrong though I still like and listen to new music but i enjoy classic rock much more. It is mainly because the music back then was actually music and not just a computer making sounds while someone raps some words to it. This is why the one song that describes me is Working man by Rush. The song is about working hard and just wanting to relax. This is what I feel everyday in architecture and it sums up how I live my life.

  11. I had this all typed out and ready to go and then the computer crashed. How incredibly frustrating.

My name is Taylor lee and I'm a 19 year-old sophomore. I'm a Flight technology major, but I've recently decided that I don't want to do that anymore. I can't think of anything else at the moment to do, and that's kind of worrying.

I'm from Silver Lake, and before that I was from Berea. I've been to a few states on the eastern seaboard and someday I hope to be able to visit foreign countries.

I'm really into movies and video games. I also like to read, but I don't read as much as I used to.

My all-time favorite band is Rush. They are the greatest band of all time and don't let anymore tell you otherwise.

My theme song is "Subdivisions' by Rush.

I had a lot more information before it crashed but I just do not want to type it up again. So here you go.

  12. Hello everyone, my name is Brian Snow, I am a sophmore here at Kent State. I have taken a pretty interesting and long route to finally end up here.

I went to high school in Moon Township, PA which is right next to the Pittsburgh international airport but I have lived many other places and it is hard sometimes choosing where I am from. My Dad was a helicopter pilot in the Army so I have lived all over the world including four years in Germany. Until moving to Moon, I hadnt lived in any one place for more than two years, kind of crazy but you get used to it.

Like Neil said above I am also on the older side, having seen 25 years in the rearview so far. I was in the Navy for five years of my life having lived the majority of that time in Washington state. I was in the Navy, however I never saw a ship, I got hooked up with one of the best jobs in the Navy, I was an avionics technician on P-3Cs. A P-3C is a large land based airplane used for submarine hunting. My job was to fix the radios and RADAR and basically all the electronic systems on the plane. P-3C squadrons go to the best places in the world, I spent six months in Japan and four in El Salvador, I also spent a few weeks in Sicily. Unfortunatly the Navy decided Submarines were not our biggest threat anymore and started using our airplanes to spy on a drier enemy so with that said I also spent four months in Qatar, three in Iraq and one in Djibouti. (it smells like it sounds)

After I served my time I decided to follow in my Dad's footsteps and become a pilot so I am in the Flight Tech program here at Kent. I would like to eventually move back to Washington State or somewhere on the westcoast and maybe fly seaplanes but for now I'm rockin it here in Ohio.

I guess I have wasted enough time on here so I will end with my theme song: The Distance - Cake.

  13. My theme song: Gobbledigook, by Sigur Ros.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQDWlvh5gtU

Gobbledigook was chosen because every word in the song, to the American's ear, is utter nonsense, and yet everything in the song sounds absolutely beautiful. This sums up my life in a nutshell.

My name is Rachel Marabito, or as half of the class now knows me, "Red Fred". I'm 19 years old, a freshman like most here at KSU. I'm currently stil enrolled in architecture, though I've changed my interest to Psychology. I'll probably minor in some form of art, as well, and I'd like to be a homeschooled art teacher on off days.

I came from the lovely -cough, sarcasm, cough- suburb of Medina, Ohio, not too far from Kent. Born and raised on an 8 acre lot of land with two brothers and a sister. I still see my family pretty often.

A few things about me you probably wouldn't know by glance:
-I've played rugby for the past 5 years of my life
    -I'm an artist
-I love cats, obssesively. Like the old women who ends up with 25 cats, yep, that'll probably be me one day.
-I work at NASA. Yep, I may look like a ditzy red-head, but I'm actually quite the nerd. I draw up circuit breakers in a computer program called AutoCad. Yep, nerd.
-I was vegetarian for 2 years, and still don't eat much meat. Nah, I don't care so much about animal rights, so I don't care if you try and bug me about it. For me it was just a challenge, that I went through for two years. Now the only reason I don't eat meat is because my stomach got so used to NOT eating meat that it gets upset when I do.

A few extra things about me:
I love photography. I went to Italy for two weeks two summers ago, and I'd really like to travel the world someday. I've always secretly wanted to be a dancer. I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to the music I listen to, but I prefer anything indie/rock/alternative. Some of my favorite bands include Radiohead, Jimmyeatworld (who by the way is coming to Cleveland within the month! So excited) Keane, Iron and Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, and Regina Spektor. I also love to cook, baking's my speciality. I'm a Christian and proud of it, but I won't shove my religion down your throat. For me it's more a relationship than a religion.

Anyway, that basically sums me up. Of course no one can truely describe themselves in approx. 300 words, so looks like you guys will just have to get to know me. (:

  14. • My name is Ted Keith i went to Rocky River high school and graduated in 2010. This is going to be my second semester of college and so far i like it here at Kent state. I did not like high school just because you had to be somewhere every day all day but here at college you can make your own schedule and have much more free time to get work done. It suits my behavior much better than the locked down routine of high school. As far as school goes i don’t like doing stuff but i do so i don’t fail. And interesting enough writing is my least favorite subject. It’s difficult for me because Spelling, Grammar, and gathering my thoughts are just all not strong points of mine and necessities for writing. I’m hoping that after this class i won’t have to dislike it so much. All last semester i only had to write one paper so all these papers we are going to have to do are going to take a tole on me but i should be ok.
    • In high school i played football wrestled and the last two years i did track for the hell of it. Wrestling was my favorite, i was a small heavyweight. It was tough sometimes to wrestle the big guys but you learn to outsmart their bear like behavior. It was always a good feeling being the smallest heavy weight by a considerable amount but being on top of the podium.
    • My major is intervention specialist which is basically a special education teacher not someone for the TV show intervention ( that’s what everyone always thinks). I choose this because every summer since i was ten i have worked at a special ed camp which i enjoy a lot also i don’t know what else i would do. Summer is my favorite season i love being outside and riding my bike everywhere. I also enjoy hanging out in the woods with my buddies. But I’m excited for this next semester and i hope i can just keep my grades up.

  15. My name is Joshua Michael Kerestes, but I go by Josh. I decided to go to Kent State because it was a good university and I had many friends that were going here. I am currently living in a dorm on campus with my two friends from high school, John and Carmen. So far I like it, the dorm is very nice and we are all getting along which is good. It was also a very close college from home because I lived in Canton. My major is nursing, it is very tough but I like working with people and learning the field. As a kid growing up I had a good childhood; I played many different sports, like football, baseball, and basketball. For the most part I think I liked basketball the most but I was best at baseball. I played baseball my whole life. I started out in tee ball working my way up. The most fun I had was playing travel ball and going to many different places. Then after travel ball I moved onto playing for my high school team. I went to a catholic school all my life, first at St. Joan of Arc for grade school, then moving on to Central Catholic High school. I was the youngest child of our family with three older sisters Brittany, Natalie, and, Jenna. They are great siblings; they have given me good advice throughout my life, and have always been there in times of need. If I had to pick a theme song for myself it would probably have to be "I’m not afraid" by Eminem. I feel this song would be right for me because for once in my life I want to do something for myself. I don’t want to always have help from someone to accomplish something. My family was always there for me but I need to do things for myself and on my own now.

  16. Hello, my name is Denene Moss. Im 18 years old. I went to Shaw High School in East Cleveland, Ohio and I graduated in 2010. I am a freshman and my major is Zoology. I was born in Dayton, Ohio but I moved to Cleveland, Ohio about 8 years ago (against my will). I am very laid back. I dont like to party much. I am not very family oriented for several reasons. My parents are not together and I live with my father. I only have one sibling. I have a sister, Jovita. I love to do HUGE puzzles, color, sing, dance, act and write poetry and songs. I dont have that many friends but who needs alot. I have one lazy eye...even though you cant tell until I cross my eyes. My weaknesses are math and english and my strong points are art and science. I hope to become a veterinarian one day but first i have to get through college. My pet peeves are depending on people and being lied to. I hate when people smack their lips when they eat. But I am ready to branch out on my own and do my own thing. I am just ready to get out of the north and head to the south because I hate the weather. I love dogs. I especially want a huskie, they are so smart. I have particpated in almost everysport you can think of since 8th grade. I may have sucked but at least I tried. I love to travel even though I really cant afford to. ALso I think my theme song would be "Save me from myself" by Christina Aguilera. Because I have been through so much heartbreak that a 18 year old should not have to go through and I finally found somebody to fix it. Overall my life is pretty low-key.

  17. Hey, my name is Shea. My real name is Sheana, but ive been going by Shea my whole life. Im from Chillicothe, Ohio and I graduated from Chillicothe High School. When I was about two months old my family moved to Oklahoma where we lived for about seven years then moved back to Ohio. As of right now I do not have a major because I have absolutely no idea what I want to do for the rest of my life. So currently I am exploratory. Things that I really hate is one science. I cant stand science, probably because im no good at it. Another thing I dont like is when people stare at me. I feel like if someone is staring at me for more then three seconds then obviously they have something to say. Two facts about me that you probably wouldnt guess from looking at me is I seen snow for the first time ever when I was seven years old, and I was the captain of my cheerleading team my senior year of high school. My theme song would have to be Pretty Girl Rock by Keri Hilson because im a pretty girl and the lyrics are so true and relate to me. The song is not just for females either because my boyfriend loves the song!

  18. My name is Hassan Shaheen. I am originally from Palestine, and I recently came from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to study Civil Engineering at the Kent State University. I am an American citizen, born and raised in two countries. From birth until the age of 12 I lived and studied from pre-school until 6th grade here in Westlake, Ohio. One day my dad got news that his job was transferring to Saudi Arabia. My family likes to stick together so we all moved back there and I attended grade 7-12 in the kingdom. The transition was more interesting than it was hard. It took me a while to adapt to everything, but I got used to it after one year of living there and learned 13 dialects of Arabic which is my second language. I learned it just from listening to people speak and I eventually caught on. I am an easy going person ,I like to always be calm and I don’t usually let things get under my skin and I always try to always maintain a positive attitude only because I know it makes people feel more relaxed around me. I don’t have many hobbies, when I am home I am either asleep or hanging out with the nicest and coolest person ever, which is my mom. I am very close to my mom because she always gets me out of trouble if I ever enter it and she gives the best advice always. She has a way of making things right just by saying a single word, and she is the best cook you will ever come by. This year she is opening up a restaurant in Saudi and I have a feeling it’s going to be great. One of my favorite things to do is travel, every summer my parents let me choose one country in Europe to visit with my friends. Last summer I spent it with all my friends that I graduated with in Ibiza, Spain. That’s pretty much all there is to know about me, I’m a really simple and relaxed guy.
